Boxer Patrick Day Dies of Traumatic Brain Injury After Being Knocked Out

Oleksandr Usyk v Chazz Witherspoon

Junior middleweight Patrick Day died from injuries he sustained while fighting Charles Conwell for the USBA super welterweight title in Chicago on Saturday (October 12). He was 27.

Conwell knocked Day down in the 10th round, landing a vicious punch behind his ear. The blow sent Day to the mat and the referee immediately called the fight without a count. Day hit his head when he landed and began twitching as paramedics ran to the ring to check on him.

He was rushed to the hospital where he slipped into a coma. He never regained consciousness and was pronounced dead on Wednesday night.

"On behalf of Patrick's family, team, and those closest to him, we are grateful for the prayers, expressions of support and outpouring of love for Pat that have been so obvious since his injury," promoter Lou DiBella said in a statement. "He was a son, brother, and good friend to many. Pat's kindness, positivity, and generosity of spirit made a lasting impression with everyone he met."
