Couple Discovers ‘Buried Treasure’ In Their Backyard

A couple from Staten Island, New York were excited after they unearthed a buried safe in their backyard that contained over $52,000 worth of jewelry and cash. Matthew and Maria Emanuel found the rusted safe while they were having new trees planted to replace ones that had fallen during the snowy winter.

When they opened the safe, they found a note along with the valuables which listed a Brooklyn address. The couple linked the address to their neighbors and brought the safe to them. Matthew told the Staten Island Advance that he "realized it must have been them, so Monday morning, I walked on over to their house and knocked on their door" and "I asked them if they’d ever been robbed."

It turns out their neighbors were robbed the night after Christmas in 2011. They had given up hope that their belongings would ever be recovered and the burglar was never caught. The owners of the safe believe that Robert Costanzo, who was convicted of 160 robberies on Staten Island, was the culprit but police never linked him to the robbery at their home.

The couple is just happy to have their valuables returned to them after seven years.
